Developing People Internationally
Accreditation workshopOver the last ten years York Associates has developed its own original approach to developing managers who lead people internationally. In 2006, directors Jeremy Comfort and Bob Dignen were invited by Henkel Germany and the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences, Germany, to create a multimedia training product designed to help people working internationally to develop their intercultural competences. In 2007, York Associates began to accredit trainers to use this resource which is based on the York Associates Developing People Internationally (DPI) approach. Accreditation will allow full access to the DPI programmed resources.
Objectives
The objectives of the Developing People Internationally programme are to help people working internationally to:
- Understand culture and its impact on behaviour in international teams;
- Understand themselves and other members of their team;
- Develop communication strategies and skills to get the best out of international teams.
Training materials
The training package consists of nine critical incidents in the life of an international project team:
- Getting to know the team – building rapport and understanding
- Direction – working to common goals
- Organisation – structuring team work
- Roles – expectations of individual team members
- Coaching – developing individual team members
- Feedback – motivating and inspiring team members
- Representing – managing the interface between the team and the outside
- Conflict – handling conflict between team members
- Cooperation – working together.
Each unit has three learning modules:
- Introduction which sets the scene for the unit focus.
- Video learning with tasks based on one or two scenes in the life of an international project team.
- Audio learning with tasks based on two or three audio interviews with managers working internationally.
The learning modules link the user directly to the following resources:
- Extracts from a 33-minute video film which portrays incidents in the life of an international project team.
- 80 minutes of audio interviews with 21 managers working internationally.
- A glossary covering key intercultural and management terms.
- Weblinks to country profiles and other useful websites.
- A Best Practice file on running and participating in international projects.
- A TIP (The International Profiler) competency overview which identifies key intercultural competencies.
Once trainers have received accreditation by following our three-day DPI programme, they will gain access to the package of training materials and be invited to join our network of DPI trainers worldwide.
Participants can opt for further one-to-one coaching and team training, following the course.Workshop dates
